Located in Loudon County, Virginia, Sterling is a small area with a population under 30,000. It has an average elevation of 289 feet (ca. 88 m) above sea level. The Greater Sterling area is home to the Washington Dulles International Airport and the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office. This office is where they test and evaluate weather instruments.
In the early 1960s, Sterling primarily consisted of large farms. One of the most notable farms was that of Fred Franklin Tavenner, a distant relative of Benjamin Franklin. Often called “The Experimental Farm,” it was one of the first farms to receive U.S. grant funding to practice researching scientific methods.
As the town began development, the M.T. Broyhill & Sons Corporation planned out a housing community. It soon became known as Sterling Park. Planning for it happened in partnership with U.S. Steel. The aim was to build affordable housing with uncommon amenities such as air-conditioning. Additionally, the Broyhills wanted each resident to have free access to pools, golf, and tennis courts. These amenities were unique at the time.

There are also several activity centers, such as the Dulles Golf Center & Sports Park, Volcano Island Waterpark, and the Claude Moore Recreation Center. The recreation center contains an Olympic-sized indoor swimming pool, a children’s pool with water features, an exercise area with a full gymnasium, and multiple event spaces.
Sterling, Virginia is a lovely place to visit to get away from the hustle and bustle of a bigger city while still offering fun and activities.
