About Manassas, VA

Situated within the Commonwealth state of Virginia (north), Manassas, VA is a historical gem. Visitors to the area can expect to immerse themselves in American history. It is also a seat for Prince William County.

Historical Overview

The town is known mostly for its role in the American Civil War. It is home to the Manassas National Battlefield Park, where two major civil war battles took place. The first conflict in 1861 was the first major battle in the area over land between the north and south. The second conflict took place in 1862.

Manassas was not a large town at the time, but it played a huge role in the war because of its rail networks. Its railroad junctions lead to the politically crucial areas of Washington D.C., Richmond in Virginia, and the Shenandoah Valley. Even though it had two Confederate victories, the Manassas junction remained under the Union for most of the war.

There are numerous other heritage sites nearby, such as the Ben Lomond Historic Site. This gorgeous estate features the quintessential, Federal-style plantation mansion, as well as a lovely rose garden. There is also a Stone Bridge nearby that is a prominent local landmark.
