When do you need to see a pulmonologist?

Signs that a patient may require the services of a pulmonary specialist may include difficulty breathing, difficulty breathing during daily activities, chest pain or tightness, chronic wheezing, frequent chest colds, difficulty controlling asthma, and more. A primary care physician may be able to provide guidance as to when a referral to a pulmonary specialist may be necessary.

While most primary care physicians are able to diagnose and treat a wide range of respiratory infections, including the common chest cold, bronchitis and other minor infections, there are a number of more complicated conditions that necessitate specialized training to diagnose effectively.

At NOVA Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Associates in Ashburn, VA our pulmonary specialists are equipped with all the latest knowledge and technology to assess and diagnose even the most complex lung conditions. We utilize the most effective tools and techniques available in order to pinpoint the exact cause of your pulmonary discomfort and put together the ultimate treatment plan tailored to your individual needs. Some of the methods we use to diagnose conditions include:

Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

It is widely known that a healthy diet and regular exercise are essential for a fulfilling life. However, one wellness habit that is often overlooked is the importance of adequate sleep. Research has consistently demonstrated that adequate sleep is essential for both mental and physical wellbeing. However, a variety of sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, can make it difficult or even impossible to achieve this goal.

Sleep apnea is one of the most common sleep disorders. However, there are various stages of sleep apnea, each with its own associated identifiers. In this article, we will explain what these identifiers are and provide information on what to do if one or a loved one experiences sleep apnea.

Neurologically, sleep apnea typically begins with benign snoring. It is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of benign snoring, as they may be indicative of future sleep apnea development. It is essential to monitor benign snoring to ensure that it does not become persistent, excessively loud, or interfere with sleep.

The second stage of the sleep apnea spectrum is UARS. UARS disrupts sleep, however, not all individuals with UARS snore; some individuals may only experience heavy breathing with an increased effort to breathe. This is usually the middle stage of the spectrum, between the two stages of obstructive and benign sleep apnea.

UARS differs from sleep apnea in that the former does not experience any or very few episodes of apnea (a short pause in breathing). Furthermore, UARS patients tend to be overweight or obese whereas sleep apnea patients are typically of average body weight. Additionally, UARS is experienced in both men and women, with men being twice as likely to develop UARS than women.

It’s important to keep in mind that if UARS isn’t treated, it can eventually turn into OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea). If you have UARS, you may need to change your daily routine and/or use an oral appliance, which is great for people who have UARS but don’t qualify for the CPAP machine.

If left untreated, obstructive sleep apnea can have serious consequences for your health. The best way to treat it depends on how many episodes you have in an hour – mild sleep apnea has 5-15 episodes per hour, moderate has 15-30 episodes per hour, and severe has more than 30 episodes per hour. Symptoms of OSA are similar to those of UARS, but they’re much worse.

If you believe you are suffering from Sleep Apnea, call NOVA Pulmonary Care and Sleep Associates for a consultation.  We are here to help you stay healthy.
